Cate Blanchett Andrew Upton’s new Berowra Waters property.Berowra Waters isn’t the usual glamour retreat for a Hollywood star, but then Cate Blanchett is not your usual A-lister either.
This week the two-time Academy Award winner and her Sydney Theatre Company artistic director husband Andrew Upton took possession of their new waterfront weekender upstream of the Hawkesbury River.
The $1,495,000 purchase exchanged in August and a tip-off followed soon after. Local agent John Moxham declined to reveal the buyer’s identity but settlement this week confirmed the property was bought in the name of a company of which the sole director is Andrew Upton.
The climate change activists bought it from Elizabeth Gaines, a non-executive director of Fortescue Metals and chief executive of travel retailer Helloworld.
Gaines is also revealed as the buyer of the North Curl Curl home of model Jennifer Hawkins and her husband, Jake Wall, for $4.1 million.
Gaines and her partner, Kevin Manuel, are trading up from their Seaforth home on Abernethy Street, which they sold last month for $2.6 million.
In Blanchett and Upton’s new weekender, there’s little to distinguish this as a typical Hollywood retreat. Like most of the other 150 houses on the western foreshore, the home is accessed only by water, backs onto the surrounding bushland and runs its own sewerage system.
“There’s not a lot of bling down here,”Mr Moxham said.
When asked whether the locals knew about the new resident yet, Mr Moxham said he wouldn’t be drawn on anyone’s identity, “but whenever anyone moves here or even if they’re just renting, we all know about it very quickly. And if they happen to be someone famous, then the smoke signals move that little bit faster.”
The isolation of the idyllic getaway makes it a good escape from the paparazzi.
Set over three levels, the ground floor is dedicated to a one-bedroom, self-contained apartment. The main residence on the upper levels has three bedrooms, a study, and a timber and stainless-steel finished kitchen, and living and dining rooms that overlook the water. As well as a detached bunkhouse at the back, it comes with a spa, sauna, terraced gardens and a pontoon.
Blanchett, who is currently shooting the movie Truth in Sydney with co-star Robert Redford, lives at Hunters Hill, where the couple bought their $10 million waterfront reserve mansion in 2004.
Blanchett and Upton last made the real estate headlines early this year when they bought an investment apartment for their children in Elizabeth Bay for $1.92 million. A year ago Upton bought an apartment in Gladesville for $780,000 for his mother, Patti.
